The Restaurant and Caterers Association has created a specific website for jobs that they need filled for most areas across Australia, including Sydney. Please log on to www.discoverjobs.com.au to look up available jobs. You can search by area, type of employment etc. Many of the jobs are close to the City and coastal areas so if you have connections in these areas please pass on the web address. For Indigenous job seekers who may be interested in getting into the hospitality industry, Yaama at Darlington (next to Redfern) is running a series of courses across 2012 to prepare people for Hospitality jobs – see attached flyer. I have eaten Yaama food at conferences and it is great!

Oakhill College will be running Morrisby Report testing this term, for students from Oakhill College and surrounding schools. The opportunity to complete this comprehensive career guidance tool is being offered to students in Year 10, 11 and 12. The report is a useful tool in the process of career and educational choices as it provides an objective statement of a person’s underlying abilities, personality and career preferences. The Morrisby Report has been extensively used in the UK for over 20 years and is gaining growing acceptance in Australia in both public and private schools. Oakhill has now administered the test a number of times and students have found the report a useful tool in assisting them in making choices regarding potential careers and further education choices. Do you have to put in extra effort at school because of your disability or condition? If so, you might want to take advantage of the support services at uni.
As of January 2010, NSW will have a new school leaving age, meaning students will complete Year 10 and then have a number of options in which to participate until at least age 17.

Riverside Theatres and their Education Partners, Veolia Environmental Services, are giving Primary School students the chance to ‘create and learn’ in a way that is sustainable and environmentally friendly while acknowledging Australia’s rich natural and cultural heritage. The competition is open to all NSW primary schools, for class group entries from classes in stages 2 and 3 (years 3-6). Hills Schools Industry Partnership (HillsSIP) is proud to be part of the School Leavers Disability Expo to be held at The Concourse Chatswood on Wednesday 6th June 2012 (12Noon – 8pm). There will be exhibitors from the Disability Sector including presentations from the Department of Employment, Education and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), Ageing, Disability and Homecare (ADHC) as well as the Department of Human Services (Centrelink) who will be there to answer questions on Disability Support Pensions and supplements that may be available. TAFE and universities will also provide information for people pursuing further training and education options. Service providers will provide information on Transition to Work programs, Community Participation, and Employment Programs, MEGT will have all information on Apprenticeships and Traineeships for people with a disability. Chatswood Rotary will put on a fantastic Sausage Sizzle on the Podium of The Concourse at 12.30pm – 2.30pm and also 4.30pm – 6.30pm so bring some coins.

The Western Sydney National Disability Coordination Officer Program and The Information Generation Group are coming together to hold 2 exciting workshops on transition planning for students with educational support needs, called the ‘Moving Forward Workshops: Parents Getting Involved in Transition Planning’. Did you know research has demonstrated consistently for a decade now that better parental involvement in transition planning for students with disability can dramatically improve the success of their transition and the outcomes they achieve? This event teaches parents, educators and service providers about how to maximise parental involvement in transition planning for students with disability, mental illness and chronic medical conditions and explains the specialist supports available in further education, training and employment. The Youth Action and Policy Association’s Western Sydney Research Project will examine the issue of the out-migration of young people aged 16-25 from western Sydney for work and study. The focus of the research will be to unpack the issues of why people enjoy living in western Sydney and what would make it a more appealing place to stay for work and study. Focus groups and interviews with young people in western Sydney will be conducted in May 2011.
